ST. PETER, Minn. - The Carroll University Men's Tennis team competed at the ITA Regionals over the last few days, with the tournament providing an ample challenge in individual play for the team as they close out their fall portion of the year.
In the Main Draw singles bracket, Ulrik Gellein and Carl Sandelin each dropped their opening-round matches but competed well against challenging opponents.
The Pioneers found success throughout the consolation and secondary brackets. In B Singles, freshman Carl Oback opened his tournament with an impressive 6-3, 6-2 straight-set victory before falling in the second round. Nate Christensen also competed in the bracket, dropping his opening match. Oback's performance provided another encouraging step in his development during his first collegiate season.
Lincoln Gates earned a victory in his opening match of D Singles before seeing his run end in the second round. Brayden Richardson battled through a hard-fought opening-round win in F Singles before falling in his next match.
Carroll's deepest runs came in G Singles, where senior Brady Wierzbicki and sophomore Carson Leighton each advanced to the semifinals. Wierzbicki put together a dominant tournament, winning two matches in convincing fashion before his semifinal run came to an end. Leighton showcased his resiliency throughout the weekend, winning a pair of tightly contested matches that both required tiebreakers before eventually bowing out in the semifinals.
In doubles competition, Sandelin and Christensen highlighted the Main Draw with an 8-5 opening-round victory before being eliminated in the quarterfinals. Gellein and Oback were unable to advance after falling in their first doubles match.
