RESULTS
KENOSHA, Wis. – Carroll's men's tennis team traveled to Carthage College this weekend to compete in the CCIW Fall Invitational. Competing in both singles and doubles play, Carroll was able to duel against conference foes and prepare for the ITA tournament in the upcoming weeks.
In the one singles flight, seniors
Adrian Gomez and Dani Ezcurra competed with Gomez finishing second overall at the Invitational. On his course to becoming the first player in program history to reach the final at the top singles flight in this annual Tournament, Gomez defeated Ian Turnbull of Illinois Wesleyan and Diego Silva of Carthage. In the final, Gomez faced Ramon Villaroig of North Central, who entered the bracket as the top seeded player. Gomez fell to Villaroig 2-6, 0-6, in the singles final on Sunday. Andrew LaBelle claimed fifth place. defeating Clayton Maack of Millikin and Ben Vigneri of Illinois Wesleyan, while only falling to Finn Morris of Carthage in the opening round. Jack McCaffrey claimed a victory over Thad Dillow of Illinois Wesleyan 6-7 (7-1) 6-4 11-9 in a thrilling match in the three singles bracket. Carroll was able to send two representatives to the four single-flight, as senior transfer,
Mark Trinka and Junior
Ryan LaBelle did the honors. Trinka claimed a victory over Emiliano Montenegro-Garza of Elmhurst 6-1 6-3. while
Ryan LaBelle defeated Rafael Miquel Isern of North Central 2-6, 6-2, 10-7. The two Pioneers met in the 3
rd/4
th place match and deferred to a no-decision. A similar story occurred in the five singles flight where
David Eman and
Felix Persson both defeated Elmhurst on their way to the 5
th/6
th place match where they deferred to a no-decision.
In doubles play, the Spanish duo of Gomez/Ezcurra took fifth place, defeating Carthage and North Central doubles teams 8-2, only falling to Illinois Wesleyan 5-8 in the opening round. In the two-double bracket, Andrew Labelle and
Felix Persson defeated the Salman/Freed tandem of Elmhurst. They lost a nail-biter to Clayton Maack and Matthew Kordesh of Millikin 7-8 9-11, which left them with a sixth-place finish. Finally, in the three-double flight, the top-seeded Trinka and McCaffrey team defeated Elmhurst and Illinois Wesleyan in dominating fashion as they advanced to the championship.
David Eman and
Ryan LaBelle were also in this bracket, defeating Millikin in the first round. During second round play, they were able to defeat the Whelan/Mitev duo at Carthage in a thriller, 8-7 7-5. The two Carroll teams met in the championship and chose to go forward, ending with a no-decision.
Carroll will be back in action on September 15 as they'll travel to LaCrosse, Wis. to face off against UW-Lacrosse in a dual meet.
