(Galesburg, Ill.) – The Carroll University track and field program battled its way to a pair of strong finishes at the 2016 Midwest Conference Indoor Championships hosted by Knox College.
Carroll's men tied Ripon College for third place in the team standings while the Pioneer women earned fourth place.
Monmouth College won the men's team title with 186 points followed by St. Norbert College (136), Carroll and Ripon (64), Grinnell College (57), Cornell College (52), Beloit College (42), Lawrence University (39), Illinois College (32) and Knox (30).
The Green Knights from St. Norbert were winners amongst the women's teams with 216 points followed by Monmouth (163), Cornell (88), Carroll (82), Beloit (48), Illinois College (36.5), Ripon (36), Grinnell (20), Lawrence (9.5) and Knox (3).
Grant Marton shined for the Pioneers in his first-ever MWC event. He won individual titles in the 800 meter run (1:55.09) and 1-mile run (4:19.94) and teamed with Mitchel Janca, Mikal Merriweather and Jesse Koenig to win the 4 x 400 meter relay (3:23.42).
The Pioneer women also finished the meet with three titles. Alissa Elwing won the 400 meter dash (58.66) while Katlyn Dovenmuehle claimed the weight throw title (47' 5"). Elwing also ran the anchor leg on the winning 4 x 200 meter relay team (1:44.53), teaming with Samantha Bartel, Raissa Spencer and Kimmy Mehlert. Elwing and Mikayla Laue finished as runner-ups in the 200 meter dash (25.83) and pole vault (9' 6 ¼"), respectively.
