Pio of the Week 2/16

Women's Track and Field

Pios of the Week (2/9-2/15)

This week's "Pios of the Week" for the week ending 2/15 are Sophomore Hana Smith of Women's Track and Field, and Senior Layton Carls of Men's Track and Field, for their performances over the past weekend at their respective events and matches.

Hana Smith - Sophomore - Women's Track and Field (Sprints/Relays)
Sophomore Hana Smith turned in a standout performance for Carroll women's track & field at the Ripon meet, leading the Pioneers with elite finishes in both individual and relay events.

Smith captured first place in the 400 meters, continuing a strong indoor season and setting the tone for Carroll's success on the track. She later anchored the winning 4x400 relay, helping the Pioneers close the meet with a victory in one of the day's premier events, which also helped shatter the Carroll school record.

Her performance contributed to Carroll's strong overall team showing and highlighted her versatility as both an individual competitor and relay leader. Smith's consistency and ability to deliver in high-impact events made her a key contributor to the Pioneers' success at Ripon.

Layton Carls - Senior - Men's Tennis
Senior Layton Carls played a key role in Carroll men's tennis going 1–1 over the weekend, delivering clutch performances as he went 4-0 across both matches.

Carls helped power the Pioneers to a 6–1 win over Hamline, earning a hard-fought singles victory that was decided in a third-set super tiebreak. Carroll claimed four singles matches in tiebreaker sets during the match, and Carls' ability to close out his point was instrumental in securing the team win. He and Felix Persson also took their doubles match 6-3.

In the second game of the day against St. Norbert, Carls continued his strong weekend by earning a clutch singles victory and again teaming with Felix Persson to pick up another doubles win. He took both of his singles' match sets after winning 7-5 in his doubles match. The Pioneers swept two of three doubles matches and pushed the Green Knights deep in singles play before narrowly falling 4–3.

Across the weekend, Carls finished 4–0, showing consistency, composure, and leadership during several pressure moments.
