Carroll Athletics Highlights: Jake Gores earned three letters in football, playing center for the Carroll team that had a 19-game winning streak. He was selected as all-state center for two years and named team captain in 1937. He was also a member of Carroll’s basketball squad and participated in intramural baseball and track. After Carroll, he settled in Fond du Lac, where he played semi-pro baseball and was an active football, track and baseball coach. In 1960 he left coaching to become an athletic director at Goodrich High School in Fond du Lac. In 1977, he was named Wisconsin Athletic Director of the Year by the Wisconsin Athletic Directors Association. His contributions to athletics in Wisconsin during his years as athletic director include establishing women’s programs before Title IX, introducing a number of football and basketball clinics for high school and elementary students, and creating opportunities for parents to become involved. The athletics field adjacent to Goodrich High School is names in Jake’s honor.
